As 'American Terriers,' pit bulls might invite less prejudice Spanky is a reminder of writer's favorite dog, Joseph Click on headline for article with photo of Joseph By Celia Downey Thanks to Peg Schaeffer for sharing the picture and the story of this beautiful puppy. The best natured and loving dog that I've ever had was a "Pit Bull". He was happy and greeted everyone with a smile. Sadly, just the phrase of "Pit Bull" has placed the breed into many environments that are unjust. These puppies are not born mean, though some are trained for violence. It is like the song by Johnny Cash, "A Boy Named Sue". According to the lyrics, just the name alone of "Sue" ruined the boy's life. The same concept applies to the name of "Pit Bull" because it stereotypes the dog. According to the American Kennel Club the "Pit Bull" is an American Staffordshire terrier AKC.org/breeds/american_staffordshir_terrier. Perhaps society should prohibit the verbage of "Pit Bull" from our accepted vocabulary and refer to the breed as the "American Terrier", giving them a chance. - Celia Downey Comments inspired by: Happy Tail: Spanky, the red nose Pit Bull This story was posted on 2014-06-29 14:35:01
