During this year's general assembly in Frankfort, Representative Kelly Flood was instrumental in securing one million extra dollars to help ensure state agency children are provided the same education as public school children. The funds will be used to enhance educational programs across the state and will be allocated over a two year period. Sue Buley, School Administrator, at the Adair Youth Development Center said the AYDC will benefit from the extra allocations. Sue Buley, School Administrator, at the Adair Youth Development Center which will benefit from the extra allocations, forwarded heartfelt thank you letters from her staff’s students to Representative Flood expressing their gratitude for standing up for them and trying to make a difference in their lives. In turn, Representative Flood on June 2, 2014 honored Mrs. Buley, her staff, and the residents with a personal visit to their facility. It was truly a special day for the Adair Youth Development Center Education Department and students. Representative Flood received a full tour of the facility and was impressed by the quality of education Mrs. Buley and her staff were already providing residents with their limited funding. Joining the tour were Dr. Ronnie Nolan who is the director of the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children known as KECSAC and Adair County Schools Title I Director, John Shelly. Dr. Nolan's office regulates state agency programs such as the Adair Youth Development Center, day treatment programs, and group homes within the state. KECSAC will be determining the distribution of the new educational funds Representative Flood was involved in securing for these at-risk youth. In our district, John Shelly oversees how Mrs. Buley will use the new funding. Mrs. Buley had nothing but words of praise for both gentleman and their unwavering support for her staff, students, and program. Sue Buley has been the administrator at the Adair Youth Development Center since it opened in 2001. And the Adair County School District is very proud that she has just been named the president of the State Agency School Administrators Association for all KECSAC programs within the state. When I asked her about the visit and the success of her program she showed her true colors when she quickly replied "any success or recognition our educational program receives can be attributed to the outstanding teachers and staff here, along with the strong support from the Adair County Board of Education." Personally, I think she might have had a little something to do with it as well. The Adair County Board of Education would like to thank Representative Flood. For not only helping to create a more level playing field for state agency children but backing up her words with positive action. By coming to meet these residents Rep. Flood not only reinforced the staffs daily reassurances that education matters but quietly showed them --- they do too. - Shamarie Claiborne This story was posted on 2014-06-05 14:49:49
