LWC has partnered with Columbia United Methodist Church to begin the Columbia-Adair County Community Garden, located at the intersection of West Guardian Street and South Monroe, behind the Adair County Food Pantry. An organizational meeting about the Columbia-Adair County Community Garden will be held at 7pmCT Wednesday, June 4, at Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY "The Columbia-Adair County Community Garden is designed to bring together individuals, families, businesses and community organizations to grow and distribute fresh produce for local residents, focusing on families in need and the elderly," said LWC Coordinator for Community Outreach and Engagement Candice Armstrong. "The garden will allow participants to improve their own gardening skills and will emphasize the use of sustainable gardening techniques that limit the amount of water, chemical and energy inputs." Armstrong has been working since early spring with LWC Assistant Professor of Biology Mike Bosela to prepare the garden for planting. The Columbia-Adair County Community Garden has two components: 8-by-8 foot raised beds and a conventionally tilled garden. The raised beds can be rented for $35 per season. Subscribers are provided with seeds and plants, fertilizers and access to garden tools. The conventionally tilled garden is a communal space that will be planted and managed by volunteers from LWC who will share the harvest. Surplus produce from the tilled garden will be donated to the Adair County Food Pantry or sold at the Columbia-Adair County Farmers Market. Armstrong said that area residents who are served by the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency may be eligible to acquire one of the raised beds for no cost. To quality for a community garden voucher from Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency, area residents' income cannot be more than 125 percent of the federal poverty level. In addition to Columbia United Methodist Church and the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency, the Columbia-Adair County Community Garden also has been supported by partnerships with the Adair County Cooperative Extension Office and Columbia-Adair Garden Club. The garden has received donations of service and materials from Burton Ace Hardware, Pyles Excavating, Sugarfoot Farms, Tractor Supply Co. and Walmart of Columbia. Advice and assistance has also been given by area residents Joni Smalle, Liz Hoag and Barbara Armitage. "It's been a real community effort to get this project going," Armstrong said. "It's so encouraging that so many people and area businesses have been involved with bringing this initiative to fruition."
