Craft beer production could brew up jobs for Columbia/Adair Co. The WET VOTE & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: 'Restaurants, businesses and breweries in Columbia and Adair County could become a tourist destinations that draw visitors from across America who are searching for authentic locally grown food, locally smoked meats, and locally produced craft beers.' - JIM BARBEE By Jim Barbee Commentary The voters of Columbia and Adair County may be able to soon make a decision that can bring jobs and economic development to our community. I call your attention to a couple recent articles, listed below, that showcase the opportunities that can come from the development of small, locally-owned craft beer breweries. We have everything we need to make this happen We have everything we need to make this happen: a hard-working community, the best farmland in America, and the wisdom of our Forefathers who brewed their own beer. Indeed, our most of our Founding Fathers, including President George Washington and President Thomas Jefferson created, on their own property, micro-breweries to fulfill the needs of their table and their guests. Taking a cue from the successful heritage of bourbon production here in Kentucky, which has now prospered for centuries, we have all the ingredients and know-how to produce a successful micro-brewing industry in our community. C/AC can bring micro brewing concept here safely and legally We can bring about this micro-brewing concept safely and legally. By allowing this craft-brewing to flourish in our community, we can ensure that all applicable state and federal laws are followed. This new industry of micro-brewing will enrich our community with new taxes, paid at the creation and the consumption of the fruits of our labor. And, best of all, it will employ our sons and daughters as they create and market a range of products that can retail to a national market. New industry could have positive effect on learning institutions This new industry would have a positive effect on our local learning institutions like Lindsey Wilson College, which could establish a degree program geared towards the art and science of micro-brewing, a field deeply rooted in chemistry and agriculture. Columbia could become a tourist destination Restaurants, businesses and breweries in Columbia and Adair County could become a tourist destinations that draw visitors from across America who are searching for authentic locally grown food, locally smoked meats, and locally produced craft beers. The possibilities are endless and are only limited by our collective imagination. The important thing we need to do now is to afford an opportunity for our local entrepreneurs to have a chance to help our community grow and prosper. Please vote so that Adair County can have the chance to develop a viable industry that we can all benefit from. - Jim Barbee, the writer, is a native of Columbia, who spent his public school years here.
