CU's Christiana Harris is NAIA All-American in triple jump Report from NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium, 18999 Oak Road W, Gulf Shores, AL. Friday's competition concludes Campbellsville's track and field season and the 2013-14 season for all Campbellsville University athletics programs. In all, 21 of CU's 25 teams in 2013-14 competed in NCCAA or NAIA regional or national championship tournaments. Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Chris Megginson GULF SHORES, AL. - Campbellsville University added another name to its NAIA All-America history Friday, May 23 - sophomore track and field athlete Christiana Harris of Georgetown, KY. Harris used a personal record jump of 11.60 meters to place eighth in the women's triple jump at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted at the Gulf Shores Sports Complex and Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. The PR mark came during Harris' second preliminary jump after she jumped 11.33 in her first attempt. The sophomore pulled up lame in her third attempt of 10.10 meters and held on to a seventh-place standing entering the evening's finals. "I was hyped. I was really excited," said Harris. "I practiced a lot before I came out here, and I was working on all of the things I needed to do to put it all together into one. I knew I was going to do better than usual, but when I PRed it was amazing." The injury during her final preliminary jump plagued Harris in the finals, as she scratched twice and jumped 11.15 on her second attempt. Despite that, she held on to her top eight finish to earn CU one team point and the program's third triple jump NAIA All-American. "The day obviously didn't go as planned, but I'm really blessed to be out here," said Harris. "We worked hard as a team throughout the year, and it's really good to come down here and get to participate in something that we all love to do and represent my school the best possible way. It was a blessing." Harris' finish in the outdoor triple jump extends CU's run of having an NAIA qualifier in triple jump to four years, including a fourth-place All-America finish by Tiosha Beasley in 2013 and runner-up finish by Keisha Chiles in 2013. Beasley also placed eighth as a sophomore in 2011, but only the top six were considered an All-American at that time. "It was surprising but at the same time she (Harris) deserved it," said George Eskridge, CU jumps coach. "We got a chance to practice together during the time off and it paid off. She's continuing the tradition in women's triple jumps." Indiana Tech's Darice Bowie upset top-seeded Akela Jones of Oklahoma Baptist to win the triple jump title with a distance of 12.59 meters on her final jump. Jones, who opted to pass her second and third prelim jumps, scratched twice in the finals and topped out at 12.47 meters. In addition to the triple jump, Harris and senior Nathelie Zetrenne both competed in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries. Harris finished 21st with a time of 15.14 seconds in the first heat, while Zetrenne finished 34th in her final collegiate race with a time of 15.92 in the third heat, which began by two of her opponents false starting. "It's bittersweet. I didn't really have a good race, but I had fun. I didn't want to psych myself out, but I did. I'm glad to make it to the NAIA, because a lot of people don't make it to the NAIA. I'm really happy for Christiana making the finals, especially since she's new to the triple," said Zetrene, who holds the 100-meter hurdles record (14.6#). The record was achieved as the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national champion in the event in 2012. Campbellsville's one team point places the Lady Tigers in a tie for 35th place among 40 teams who have scored points through 10 events. The NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships began Thursday and will conclude Saturday, May 24. "I think they both did really well. They came out and knew what they had to do. I think they raced well and Christiana did well in jumps. Going in, she wasn't seeded in that position, so to finish eighth was exciting for both her and us coaches," said head coach Hilary Lakes.
