The board at Lake Cumberland Area Development District honored Columbian Patrick Bell, its first executive director, by naming the Russell Springs office building the Pat Bell Building in a ceremony preceding the full board meeting on May 22, 2014.

The building's new letters were unveiled by Patrick Bell's two children, Rob Collins Bell, Campbellsville, KY, and Jennifer S. Bell, Lexington, KY.

Donna Diaz, Executive Director of Lake Cumberland Area Development District, presided at the Building Dedicatation. Field Rep. Shannon Roberts, representing Congressman Harold Rogers' staff read a letter and presented Bell with a flag that had flown over the nation's capital.

There was a special presentation from the office of State Senator Sara Beth Gregory, (KY-16), of Monticello, KY.

A letter was also read from John Chowning, vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president of Campbellsville University, who was hired by Bell to work at the ADD in the 1970s and who remains a close friend.

Chowning said, "This is a fitting tribute to an individual who has given sacrificially of his time, service, talents and wisdom to enhance the quality of life and economic and community development of our ten county region."

Chowning praised Bell for his vision and work in the Appalachian region encouraging cities and counties to work together across geographic and political boundaries and to speak with unity of voice and purpose in Frankfort and Washington for the advancement of the region.

It is the second public building to be named for the former Mayor of Columbia. The McCreary County Health Department Building in Whitley City is the Pat Bell building as well. - Linda Waggener
