Bill Troutwine: Help save the honeybee!

Click on headline for article with photo(s)

By Bill Troutwine

Along with policing, flying, and hunting I raise honey bees.

I thought CM readers may enjoy a couple of pictures of a honey bee swarm I captured yesterday evening (5-13-14). I would like to encourage all your readers to help preserve the honey bee. Our bee population is in drastic decline nationally, and I understand here in Kentucky we lost around 50% of our bee population this last winter.

Please, if you find a swarm of bees don’t kill them, contact a bee keeper you know, or contact me (270-385-9597), or the Ag Extension Office. Also if you have a swarm of bees that has built a hive in an old building or some similar area, a bee keeper can remove them for you, too. In most cases bee keepers will remove them free of charge just to get the bees. PLEASE, don’t do like one person I know, and douse the swarm with gasoline.

Honey bees pollinate 80% of our produce and fruits. If we lose the honey bee we lose a huge portion of our food supply. We need honey bees, and they need us to help insure their survival. - BILL TROUTWINE
