COLUMBIA, KY - The second-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball team used an RBI single by senior Madison Scott in the fifth inning to defeat top-seeded Saint Xavier (IL) 1-0 in the Lindsey Wilson Bracket of the 2014 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.

Lindsey Wilson's (47-9) Jordan Hood was spectacular as she threw a complete-game shutout for the second day in a row. Hood allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts without issuing a walk.

Saint Xavier's (46-8-1) Nicole Nonnemacher was equally as stellar as she threw four scoreless innnigs to begin the game.

The Blue Raiders broke through in the fifth inning with two outs as Brittney Graves reached on a walk followed by an Andrea Whelan single that moved Graves to second. Scott came up to the plate and hit an RBI single to shallow center field to score Graves and give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Hood ran into trouble as she gave up a leadoff single to Katie Houlihan followed by a single by Katie Sears to give Saint Xavier runners on first and second with no outs. Houlihan and Sears later advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Hood was able to settle down and strike out the next two batters before inducing a fly out to end the inning and keep the Cougars off the scoreboard.

After two quick outs to begin the seventh, Saint Xavier was able to get the tying run on base after a Blue Raider error. But Hood was able to get a pop out to end the game and send Lindsey Wilson to the championship game on Wednesday.

Hood improves to 23-2 on the season with the win.

Nonnemacher (21-5) finished the game with 13 strikeouts while allowing five hits with one earned run. Amanda Hainlen, Kasey Kanga, Houlihan and Sears all finished with one hit each.

Lindsey Wilson faces Saint Xavier again in the championship game after the Cougars battled their way out of the elimination bracket on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 9amCT with the "if necessary" game to follow. - Charles Balcom, Lindsey Wilson College
