History Quiz: Which is Front Door of Historic Courthouse? A Grade Yourself Quiz: Do you know which is which? If you haven't peeked at the pictures, you might take a guess before clicking on the headline for the answer. Is it the Greensburg Street entrance or the one on Jamestown Street. And after you guess, ask "Why?" There are three reasons. Give yourself 25 points for knowing the right door and 25 points for knowing one of the reasons. Fifty points passes. If you get the wrong door - you've failed. By Mike Watson Not many refer to a "front" and "back" door of the Adair County Courthouse these days, but there is a "front" door - and a "back" door. Front door originally was because Jamestown Street to Creelsboro Road was the "main drag" in the late 1900s. Even though Greensburg, Campbellsville and Burkesville were all important town to us, Creelsboro had been for a long time the main route to transportation, the Cumberland river. Also, the Sheriff's office was traditionally on that end of the courthouses. And, for the "new" 1885 courthouse, the columns with faces carved on them, were on that end, which was considered the dominant entrance. - MIKE WATSON This story was posted on 2014-05-03 15:07:48
