Rifles and knives from Richie Farmer tenure to go up for auction

By Ted Sloan

FRANKFORT, KY - The state will auction dozens of high-quality collector's items left over from a 2008 agriculture conference during Richie Farmer's tenure as Kentucky agriculture commissioner. Registration and viewing will open at 7amCT/8amET, and the auction is scheduled to begin at 8amCT/9amET. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will sell 13 Remington rifles and 16 Case knives in an auction May 5, 2014 at KDFWR headquarters, 1 Sportsman's Lane west of Frankfort. Proceeds from the auction will help fund an urban garden project that will be announced later this year.

"We saw this auction as a way to make something positive out of what was an unfortunate situation," current Agriculture Commissioner James Comer said. "We're pleased that we will be able to recoup some of the dollars spent on these items and put them toward an important agricultural project."

All items will be sold as is. Paperwork and background checks must be completed onsite before the firearms can be released.

The specially engraved rifles and knives were intended as gifts for agriculture commissioners and their top aides from member states of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture. The 2008 SASDA Conference was held in Kentucky.

"I hope collectors around Kentucky will bid aggressively on these items knowing that their dollars will go toward something worthwhile," Commissioner Comer said. "The winning bidders can forever point to these items as their contribution toward changing the culture in Frankfort."

For more information on the auction and the items, call the Kentucky Department of Agriculture at (502) 564-4696.
