Jon Halsey: The mystery bird is a cowbird

Comments re photo 54443 Birds of Kentucky Female Cowbird Young Catbird

By Jon Halsey

According to National Geographic the Catbird has a distinct dark gray plumage with a black cap. They further state that no other American bird has this uniform dark gray plumage.

That would seem to rule out the Catbird. Based on the short tail and bill, I would cast my vote for a Brown Headed Cowbird of the female persuasion.

I know at least one your readers has a cat that seems to be expert on birds and seems to enjoy checking them out.

My suggestion would be to secure that particular cat and see if it and the bird hold an intelligent conversation. If they did that would seem to be definitive proof that once again I'm wrong and it is definitely a Catbird. Of course such an experiment might render the whole exercise moot but they pure scientific research always has it's risks. jon halsey Knifley --jon halsey
