Finds irony in Glocks being called Safe Action Pistols Comments re article 66654 ACSO investigates accidental shooting in Knifley By Jon Halsey Tragic but not uncommon. Chances are pretty good that the firearm in questions was a Glock. The Glock line has many outstanding attributes with most of them centering around a number of safety mechanisms, however the take down procedure is more often than not a disaster waiting to happen. To disassemble a Glock pistol you remove the magazine, then DEPRESS THE TRIGGER while pulling down on the slide releases on either side. If the user has one hand on the slide release and uses the other hand to depress the trigger to remove the slide - any live round left in the chamber will of course fire and usually the hand pulling down on the slide releases is partially in front of the barrel. Of all the handguns I have personally owned over the years the Glock is the only one that has the user depressing the trigger to release the slide. They say familiarity breeds contempt and I'm sure that after several years of breaking down a pistol, it would not be unheard of for someone to absentmindedly forget to check the chamber after removing the magazine. Ironically the Glock is called the "safe-action" pistol. - Jon Halsey This story was posted on 2014-04-14 17:33:33
