COLUMBIA, KY - Nationally ranked No. 9 Lindsey Wilson softball took the first game of a Mid-South Conference doubleheader against Campbellsville (KY) 7-5, but fell 11-6 in an eight-inning game two at Lindsey Wilson Park on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 before a crowd of 149.

The Blue Raiders (31-5, 17-3 MSC) opened game one with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Andrea Whelan reached on a walk, Madison Scott moved Whelan over with a sacrifice bunt and Kristina Krupinksi doubled to right field to score Whelan.

The Tigers (26-14, 13-9 MSC) were able to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Shelby Ray doubled to shallow center, scoring Kate Black. Lindsey Wilson responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Krupinski reached first base on a fielder’s choice, and then moved to third on a Bailey Mize double to deep left-center. Abbi Goedde brought in both runners as she singled to right-center.

Campbellsville would get both runs back in the top of the sixth. Black doubled to deep center, scoring Erin Benton and Kendyl Ahrens, but was tagged out trying to stretch her hit into a triple. The Blue Raiders opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lindsey Wilson batters combined for five singles and a walk.

A two-run homerun by Heather Oakley cut the deficit to 7-5, but that was all the Tigers could manage. Casey Bryan picked up the save, improving to 15-1. The freshman pitched six innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Krupinksi went 3-for-4 with a run batted in and Goedde was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Tigers struck early in the second game, plating five runs off of three hits, including two homeruns. Lindsey Wilson turned to Jordan Hood, who ended the damage with three straight strikeouts. A Bailey Mize single up the middle scored two runs to make it 5-2 after the first inning.

Sara Paragon added a run to Campbellsville’s lead in the top of the third as she took a full-count pitch over the center-field fence. The Blue Raiders would not give up, though, as the team scored two runs in the bottom of the third off a double by Hood. Lindsey Wilson would score two more runs in the fourth as a Mize hit dropped in shallow left-center, bringing in Whelan and Krupinksi.

Play was halted before the start of the sixth inning due to lightning in the area. As the game resumed, the rain began to fall and both teams looked to take advantage. Neither could get the job done in seven innings, but Campbellsville was able to jump ahead with five runs in the eighth. The Tigers used five hits, including a two-run homerun and two doubles, and benefited from a pair of Blue Raider errors to distance themselves late.

The Blue Raiders turned to the heart of their order, but could not get anything done as Campbellsville held on to win the game and split the series. - Pierce Yarberry Next: Lindsey Wilson softball hosts Cumberland U
