LW Baseball uses walk-off win to split with Shawnee State

Blue Raiders fell 1-0 in a pitcher's duel in game one before scoring three runs in the final inning of game two for the 3-2 comeback victory

COLUMBIA, Ky. - A final-inning rally in game two by Lindsey Wilson baseball helped split a pair of games with Shawnee State on Saturday evening at Egnew Park.

The Blue Raiders (21-18, 9-7 MSC) fell in a pitcher's duel in game one 1-0 before bouncing back with a 3-2 comeback victory in the final inning of game two.

Lindsey Wilson's England Smith and Shawnee State's (22-18, 9-7 MSC) Derek Moore both dominated from the pitcher's mound in game one.

After giving up a single to the second batter he faced, Smith retired the next seven batters before issuing a walk in the top of the third. He then retired six-straight batters before giving up another walk in the fifth.

Moore gave up a hit to Mark Silva to open the game, but responded by retiring 13 consecutive batters before Jordan Berry hit a single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Bears were able to put together some offense in the top of the sixth after a leadoff double by Todd Queener. A groundout moved the runner to third and a sacrifice fly brought Queener in to give Shawnee State a 1-0 lead.

Smith (4-3) took the loss but kept the Blue Raiders in it as he went eight innings with one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts.

Sam Ross went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to hold the Bears to their one-run lead.

The lead proved to be enough for Moore as he retired nine-straight batters heading into the ninth.

Nick Hoffman opened the bottom of the ninth with a single and was bunted over on a sacrifice by Jacob Roberts. But the Blue Raiders were unable to get him any further as the next two batters popped out and struck out to end the game 1-0.

Moore (7-1) picked up the win after pitching a complete-game shutout with just three hits and six strikeouts.

Shawnee State wasted little time to get on the scoreboard in game two as the Bears used a pair of hits to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

A pair of Blue Raider errors followed by a wild pitch allowed Shawnee State to add another run in the top of the fourth in a seven-inning game. The Bears had the bases loaded later in the inning but were unable to push another run across.

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Lindsey Wilson offense that struggled all day needed a spark and a little help to get things going.

Michael Rosario led off with a single to left field and Berry reached on an error after the second baseman bobbled the ball when attempting to make the throw to second for a double play.

Leonardo Ramirez bunted and the ball just missed the diving Shawnee State pitcher's glove. His throw to third was off target and Rosario slid in safely for the bases to become loaded with no outs.

Hoffman stepped to the plate and hit a ball deep to right field for a sac fly that allowed Rosario to score and Berry to advance to third.

Silva then laid down a bunt on a safety squeeze down the first-base line. The Bears' pitcher fielded the bunt and threw the ball past the catcher that allowed Berry to score with ease, Ramirez to move to third and Silva move all the way to second base. Carlos Alegria was then intentionally walked to load the bases.

Roberts stepped to the plate and hit the first pitch he saw into right-center field that allowed Ramirez to tag and score for the 3-2 walk-off win.

Luke Shearrow (3-2) earned the complete-game win for Lindsey Wilson giving up two runs - one earned - on five hits with a career-high eight strikeouts.

Cody Strayer (3-6) suffered the loss after giving up three unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
