Two Heroes: Larry Burton and C.R. Drake

2014-03-12 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Vietnam War Veteran Larry Burton, Left delivered an emotional appeal to the Adair Fiscal Court to fly the MIA/POW Flag at the Adair County Courthouses. He was introduced by Commander Joe Hare, VFW Post 6097. As he spoke of his service, the Vietnam soldiers who never returned, and of the treatment of the these veterans on their return, there were more than a few teary eyes. The request was unanimously approved, 7-0. The flags will cost only $49-50 each, and Commander Hare said that for the two downtown standards, only four year would be needed. With Mr. Burton, right, is Knifley Fire Chief and former Marine C.R. Drake, an iconic hero of the Knifley Pipeline Explosion whose extraordinary professionalism taking charge of a terrible situation is now an indelible part of Adair County history.

Experience Counts. Knowledge Counts: Dispatcher Joe Collins

2014-03-12 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Adair County Dispatcher Joe Collins was cited at the Adair County Fiscal Court, Tuesday night, March 11, 2014, as the man who is 911. Adair County Fire Chief Mike Glasgow, speaking passionately about improving 911 Services, told the court that Collins knows the county, knows how to guide first responders to their destination, and scolded the court for not adequately paying mature dispatchers enough. CJE Ann Melton and the court agreed to revisit the pay scale for 911 dispatchers. Collins was recently rehired at $9/per hour, far less than the $10.80 he was making in 2005 and far below comparable dispatcher pay in Taylor County. Judge Melton noted that the 911 budget has been hit hard by the reduction in land lines and the failure of the Kentucky legislature to, as yet, enact a bill which would add 911 fees to cell phones, and by the failure of the Adair County EMS, a taxing district to support the service, and most of all of the total absence of financial help from the City of Columbia. "The City contributed $50,000 per year back when the 911 center was in the Adair County Jail," she said, "and now," she said, "they contribute nothing."

One-two punch gets dramatic action at Fiscal Court

2014-03-12 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Tony Grider left the lead spokesman for Adair County's Fire Chiefs, rose again in support of a passionate, blunt, and persuasive scolding of Fiscal Court for its failure to pay experienced dispatchers salaries commensurate with other 911 dispatchers in the area, and for the need to improve communications. Glasgow told the court that the biggest issue is for 911 dispatchers to know the locations where first responders are needed, and how to direct them to it. The court gave a first reading to dissolve the 3-man 911 board as it is now constituted, with two lawmen and one responder. Tentatively, the plan is to re-establish the board with as many as nine members - four from law enforcement to satisfy NCIC (National Crime Information Center) requirements and four first responder and/or magisterial members. The court members generally agreed with the fire chiefs, but noted the financial constraints they face with reduced land line use tax, and with the withdrawal of support from two of the 911 Centers biggest users, the City of Columbia Police Department and the Adair County Emergency Medical Service. - Ed Waggener
