Ice Storm: Better be prepared if predicted storm does hit area Bob Barnes, in his work as a plumber and in his volunteer work in emergency disasters, has seen the consequences of ice storms and electricity outages. It's a dangerous situation. But danger can be reduced if one is prepared. Click on headline for entire article By Bob Barnes When Iben Browning predicted the earthquakes for out area in 1990 we soon realized he was wrong. However, many of us took actions to prepare for an earthquake. Many of us purchased earthquake insurance on our homes. With the impeding ice storm that is predicted for our region I can only reflect back on my past experience of being without electricity for days. From helping with devastating tornadoes to the ice storm that hit north of here a few years ago I have witnessed near pandemonium. Days without electricity means no fuel, no use of ATM, no water, no heat and sometimes no communications. I have seen long lines in Junction City gas stations with people driving from Danville to just fill their Kerosene or Diesel jugs. Junction City was the nearest city to Danville that had electricity. We all depend on electricity so much. I know this storm could bring up to 3/4 of an inch of ice according to WHAS. From what I have read this ice accumulation could add up to 3,000 pounds of weight on the power lines. I write this message to hope to get people to get prepared and to make plans in advance on what they should do if they were to be without electricity for days. Some thoughts of mine are as follows:
