News from the Adair County Elementary School

This story was brought to my attention not by a principal, the superintendant, parents, or even other staff members, but by students. Yes, I said students!

Ahead of the curve for 'Leader in Me'

Marion Grant, 5th grade practical living and social studies teacher at Adair County Elementary School, is ahead of the curve as usual! Many of you have heard about the "Leader in Me" program the Adair County School System will be implementing next year.

I have written about and showcased a hand full of staff members who have taken the ball and are running with it. And the first reactions from students are nothing short of fabulous! They are so proud of what they are doing they want everyone to know.

Theme is 'You're the Leader'

The theme of Mrs. Grant's classroom is "You're the LEADER of your life!" Students are given different jobs within her classroom such as writing the I CAN statement each day, noise control, straightening desks, door closer, passing out papers, and the list goes on and on.

Every student has a job. The difference is, students in Mrs. Grant's room receive a salary of $50 per week for performing their job with Thursdays being payday.

Students can 'buy' rewards with their funds

Students can "buy" rewards with their funds. There all are all kinds of items available at the Grant Mini Mart including everything from school supplies, treats, or you can even purchase a pass to be "teacher for a day".

Students required to be prepared for fines

No it isn't all fun and games. Students are required to bring their money to class each day in case they incur a fine.

The money rolls both ways in Mrs. Grants class. Fines can be imposed for Talking $5, yelling or blurting out $5, Not Listening $10, Arguing $20, Uncompleted Assignments $20, and Destruction of Property $50.

Students learn leadership . . . and consequences

Not only does Mrs. Grants classroom exemplify the "Leader in Me" program principals of positive responsibility, but it requires students to be responsible for their negative actions as well.

It encompasses the core content connected to practical living and students learn about having a job, managing money from payday to payday, and saving for rainy day or for something you want. Actually it is ingenious. So proud to call her a colleague! She is another shining star at Adair County Elementary School. - Shamarie Claiborne
