Hospital Board Chairman resigns; board seeking sale of hospital In tonight's Adair County Hospital Board of Trustees meeting
Click on headline for complete board report By Ed Waggener Westlake Regional Hospital CEO Neal Gold announced tonight, in the Adair Hospital District's regular February 25, 2014 meeting that the hospital is in negotiations with four prospective buyers. He did not name the prospects in the meeting. Gold said that attorneys for the hospital will tell the bankruptcy judge of the plan to sell when it files a plan of adjustment on February 28, 2014, the deadline for doing so. He said that the hospital will be requesting additional time to work out the details. Chairman Craig Pyles announces resignation At the meeting, Chairman Craig Pyles also announced his resignation, effective with the meeting, leaving three members on the five person board of trustees: Vice Chairman Richard Grant, Secretary Brad Keltner, and Treasurer Bruce White. Pyles, who has guided the hospital through some of its toughest days, during which its fortunes have been turned around, did not state the reason for his resignation, but he will be moving out-of-state in his management role for Pyles Transport and would not be eligible to continue as a trustee. Mr. Gold presented him with a plaque, to the applause of a packed Board Conference room at the hospital. Hospital fortunes better Westlake CFO David Hayes said that the financial show "a dim light at the end of a long tunnel." In a nutshell, he said that at the hospital's present rate of return, the $17,000,000 deficit could be paid off in 17 years. Chairman Craig Pyles noted that the big difference will be in increasing utilization of clinics and facilities. Chairman Gold introduced his new marketing director, Laura Wade, who will be working with Justin Mardis and Tonya Luttrell on promotions. Recruiting pediatrician He said that he is placing heavy emphasis on recruiting a pediatrician or a family physician who focuses on young children to help fill a gap in that area of service. Gold said the organization is doing well with patients over 14, but loses patients during pre-natal and the early years. He's addressing that partially with the renovation of the office at Westlake Family Practice formerly occupied by surgeon, Dr. Bergen. It will serve as an obstetrics clinic. The board was told that hospital census are beginning to slowly climb, but that the clinics - Edmonton Primary Care, Westlake Primary Care, and Russell County Rural Health Clinic, were down. Only Westlake Family Practice showed an increase, which Gold attributed to the popularity of family physician Dr. Phil Aaron. Children's Health Carnival Planned Gold said that a Children Health's Carnival is being planned in cooperation with the Adair County Health Department. It will be funded in part by grant money obtained by the health department, and will be similar to the hospital's fall Heatth Fair, but with an emphasis on children. Gold said that the fair will be held April 26, 2014, and will have booths offering health and nutrition handouts, and will offer a fun day with inflatables and other attractions for kids. Approval is beginnning to come through for swing beds Gold said that approval was received from CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) for the utiiization of swing beds, but still needs approval to bill. Physical plant update Gold reported that the new roof is now 85% complete, and that new flooring has been installed in several areas. After the roofing and flooring is complete, several areas will be painted following a paint scheme provided by Norton Healthcare designers. He said that rooms on the second floor in the west wing, formerly utilized for offices, will be renovated for Behavioral Unit beds for adolescent patients.
