Camp Safari at ACES . . . every day is an adventure!!! Adair County Elementary School's 21 Century Community Learning Center program. SAFARI is an acronym for 'staying after -school for academics, recreation and imagination' Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Debbie Cowan News from Camp Safari, Adair County Elementary School For many students, the end of the regular school day means boarding a bus and departing for home. However, for numerous Adair County Elementary School (ACES) students, a new adventure begins each afternoon at Camp SAFARI, ACES's 21 Century Community Learning Center program. Safari is an acronym for "staying after -school for academics, recreation and imagination" and the program delivers on its promise to provide before and after-school extended learning and enrichment opportunities for 3rd - 5th grade students. Camp SAFARI activities are offered daily, Monday - Thursday, 3:00 - 5:00 and each Friday from 1:00 - 3:00. Participating students have a variety of activities to choose from each day. They can spend their time reading, working on homework, improving math skills or receiving one-to-one assistance from teachers. Many enjoy art class, technology time with I Pads and physical fitness activities in the gym. The environmentally friendly Green Team is a favorite program for the students as is the Leadership Club and the Lego Lab. SAFARI classes and activities are taught by ACES staff and community volunteers. Principal Steve Burton is very pleased with the opportunities provided through Camp Safari. "It has been awesome", he stated. "It has provided another link in our chain to student's academic and personal success." In addition to before and after-school programs, an extensive summer program is being planned for students to ensure that learning continues into the summer months. Pam Bivens, Camp Safari coordinator, is excited about the number of students that are participating. She reports that "the students attending Camp Safari activities seem to be engaged and enjoying the program. I've heard from numerous parents who are appreciative of the extra academic opportunities offered to their children. Whether it is homework help, math tutoring, accelerated reading or the Leadership Club, all participating students are given the opportunity to grow academically and socially." 21st Century Community Learning Center programs (21st CCLC) are made possible through grant funds from Title IV, Part B, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Centers are designed to offer activities that complement regular student academic programs and support family involvement in education. The Adair County School District is very fortunate to have two 21st CCLC programs ensuring that all K-5th grade students receive quality enrichment opportunities through after-school and summer programs. Camp Casey, a long-standing, highly successful program is currently offered at Adair County Primary Center while the newly established Camp Safari serves students at Adair County Elementary.
