People for miles around remember the 1985 Beaumont Explosion The Knifley Pipeline Explosion brought to mind the spectacular explosion at Beaumont, KY, in April of 1985. Scores, perhaps hundreds of Adair Countians remember the light from the explosion; perhaps there was a boom heard here, too. A large number of people from Metcalfe and surrounding remember the Texas Eastern Gas Transmission natural gas pipeline explosion at Beaumont, KY, which took the lives of five people, Saturday, April 27, 1985' The List of pipeline accidents in the United States 1975 to 1999 in Wikipedia describes the explosion as follows: '1985 A 30-inch diameter gas pipeline operating at about 960 psi, weakened by atmospheric corrosion, ruptured, and tore out about 29 feet (8.8 m) of the carrier pipe, blew apart about 16 feet (4.9 m) of a 36-inch casing pipe, blasted an opening across Kentucky State Highway 90, and cut out a pear-shaped crater approximately 90 feet (27 m) long, 38 feet (12 m) wide, and 12 feet (3.7 m) deep near Beaumont, Kentucky. 5 people were killed in one home, and 3 injured. The fireball from the incident could be seen 20 miles away. (April 27, 1985)It seems that hundreds of people in Adair County remember that day - remember seeing the flare in the sky. By road, it's some 35 miles to the site of the Beaumont explosion from Columbia, KY. The Wikipedia list also includes a January 16, 1979 explosion in London, KY; and a 1980 explosion at Simon Kenton High School in Independence KY which injured 37 persons. In Columbia, KY, there was also a gas explosion at a home off Russell Road, just past the old rock quarry within the city limits, which resulted in a fatality or fatalities. Not sure whether it was a pipeline or bottle gas explosion. Perhaps someone else can remember. The explosion was within the past five decades, as I recall. - EW This story was posted on 2014-02-16 06:47:54
