Joyce M. Coomer: Methodist and EUB churches at Pellyton After merger of denominations, Barnett's Creek United Methodist Church and Pellyton United Methodist Church were separate entities until pastors of Barnett's Creek UMC and Sunday School Superintendent at Pellyton UMC deemed it appropriate move to consolidate . . . with any input from the Pellyton UMC congregation. - JOYCE M. COOMER. Click on headline for complete article By Joyce M. Coomer On April 23, 1968, The United Methodist Church was created when Bishop Reuben H. Mueller, representing The Evangelical United Brethren Church, and Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke of The Methodist Church joined hands at the constituting General Conference in Dallas, Texas. With the words, "Lord of the Church, we are united in Thee, in Thy Church and now in The United Methodist Church," the new denomination was given birth by two churches that had distinguished histories and influential ministries in various parts of the world. - from the UMC website . . . At that point, Pellyton Methodist Church became Pellyton United Methodist Church, and Barnett's Creek Evangelical United Brethren Church became Barnett's Creek United Methodist Church. These two churches were separate entities until the mid-1990s when the preacher for the charge and the Sunday School superintendent at Pellyton United Methodist Church deemed it an appropriate move to consolidate the two churches without any input from the congregation of Pellyton United Methodist Church. After this, the members of Pellyton United Methodist Church (many of whom had attended Pellyton United Methodist Church for many years, most of them from the time of their birth) raised money and purchased the Pellyton church building and grounds from The Columbia (possibly Campbellsville as I don't know when it changed) District of the Kentucky United Methodist Church. Methodist History of Adair County Kentucky 1782-1969 by Vista Royse Allison probably includes much more information up to the merger and immediately after the merger than I have included here. I need to pull it off the shelf and read it! - Joyce M. Coomer This story was posted on 2014-02-11 01:27:28
