Lindsey Wilson Volleyball signs five for its 2014 recruiting class Blue Raiders add one transfer and four high school signees expected to make an immediate impact. Joining Lindsey Wilson in the class is Caitlyn Tino (Defensive Specialist, Louisville [KY]), Catie Cline (Middle Blocker, Dallas [Texas]), Sophia Riviere (Outside Hitter, Temecula [CA]), Charlotte Wellens (Middle Blocker, TSV Vilvoorde [Belgium]) and Sarah Shilling (Outside Hitter, IU-East [IN]). By Charles Balcom COLUMBIA, KY - Five new Blue Raiders will join the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team in 2014, according to head coach Andy Cavins who announced his recruiting class on Monday, February 10, 2014. The group features one transfer student-athlete and four high school signees. Four players hail from different states while one is an international student from Belgium. Joining Lindsey Wilson in the class is Caitlyn Tino (Defensive Specialist, Louisville [KY), Catie Cline (Middle Blocker, Dallas [Texas]), Sophia Riviere (Outside Hitter, Temecula [CA]), Charlotte Wellens (Middle Blocker, TSV Vilvoorde [Belgium]) and Sarah Shilling (Outside Hitter, IU-East [IN]). "All of our recruiting classes fill certain needs for our program, but also strive to make us better than we were the previous season," Cavins said. "With eight seniors next season it was paramount that we bring in student-athletes that will be able to grow in our program over the next four years." "Most importantly, all five of these players make our team the strongest and deepest it has been. We fully expect to defend our conference title and not only make the National Tournament, but compete for a National Championship." Tino joins Lindsey Wilson from Louisville Male High School where she was named the Defensive Specialist of the Year in 2011 and 2013. "She has played at an extremely high level in high school and in club volleyball," Cavins said. "Caitlyn has the ability to compete for our libero role as a freshman. She is a tenacious and athletic defender that will make an instant impact as a defensive specialist or libero." Cline joins the Blue Raiders from Wyle East High School in Dallas, Texas where she collected numerous academic and athletic awards. She earned academic all-state honors three times, was named second-team all-district her junior year and first-team all-district her senior year and named to the academic all-state team. "Catie was our first recruit for this class and the expectations on her are extremely high," Cavins said. "Our staff expects Catie to replace Kailey Moorhead who is coming off arguably the greatest single-season performance in Lindsey Wilson volleyball history." "She is a naturally gifted blocker with an extremely long wing-span that enables her to close seams and contact at a very high point. Catie has played for Dallas Skyline and Dallas Premier, two of the preeminent club programs in the country, so she is accustomed to playing at a high level." Riviere comes from Temecula Valley High School in Temecula, CA, where she was a three-year varsity letter winner. She earned all-scholastic honors in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and was named all-league in 2012 and 2013. "Sophia brings a dynamic to our program that we have never possessed. As a left-handed hitter, she provides options to vary our offense and utilize her all over the court," Cavins said. "She is gifted with an enormously powerful arm and combined with her court awareness, she has the ability to terminate at will." "She plays club volleyball for 951 Elite and will be our fourth recruit from that program. They are consistently prepared to make our program better in every phase, and she will be a main stay on the outside or right side for the next four years." Wellens joins Lindsey Wilson from TSV Vilvoorde in Belgium where the 6-3 middle blocker played for the Belgium Youth National Team. - Charles Balcom "She is by far the most imposing player in our program," Cavins said. "She is extremely fluid for her size and highly successful attacking from behind the setter." "Charlotte is expected to stabilize our M2 position and we look forward to having four years of her game-changing and intimidating presence." Shilling joins the Blue Raiders for her final season of eligibility. The 6-0 outside hitter attended Indiana University East for her first three seasons where she was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete and three-time all Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) performer. "In addition to Charlotte, Sarah has also joined our program in the spring. She has been an instant gift to our program and we expect her to push us towards a national title in her final year of eligibility," Cavins said. "Her leadership and National Tournament experience will be huge in assisting us to replace our three seniors." "With the addition of Sophia and Sarah, combined with Nadelina Nesheva, Sarah Anderson and Daryna Liutikova, we will have the best core of pin hitters in the history of the program." - Charles Balcom, Lindsey Wilson College This story was posted on 2014-02-10 14:01:30
