Jackson Brower: Memories of the old Baptist Church in Pellyton Jackson Brower identifies the Pellyton photo posted this morning, and adds not only a suitable caption, but a great story as well. He doesn't remember seeing the light in the sanctuary, but it was the place were he first heard I'll Fly Away - a moment forever etched in his memory Click on headline for complete story and photo of church By Jackson Brower This is the old Baptist Church. It was right across from the lane that went down to Clyde & Christine Gensert's place. We met Clyde and Christine down at The Farm near Monticello, and they asked us to join up with them in Pellyton. After staying a few days with them, we decided to rent the old Sinclair place a hop, skip and a jump from Lemmon's Grocery/Shell Store. So, the church was halfway between Lemmon's and Bobby Beard's Grocery/Chevron store on old Rt 206 right in the heart of downtown Pellyton. When I was watching the Backyard Oil episodes, I had a flashback about Jimmy Reliford and Travis Coomer playing in checker tournaments. The same thing was going on in Lemmon's Grocery Store in the '70s. The participants included Joe Taylor, Leonard Beard, Stanley Rich (when he wasn't working at Jeffries Hardware) and one of the Caldwells. Pam and I actually attended that Baptist Church a few times. We were invited by Jimmy and Loretta Martin's Grandma (can't remember her name). What I can remember was hearing the song "I'll Fly Away" for the first time. I'm kinda like George Carlin in the sense that I think the best thing about going to church is the music. - - JRB Comments re photo 53491 Scenic Adair Co KY Help needed to caption Pellyton photo This story was posted on 2014-02-09 09:36:53
