Alumnus Bob Pollock returns to LWC for 1st time since '66 'Pollock, who was a forward during his two years at Lindsey Wilson, played for LWC Athletic Hall of Fame basketball coach Don Green. Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY- The last time Bob Pollock was at Lindsey Wilson College, the school's sole basketball team was only for male students, and they played all of their home games in what is now the Adair County Middle School gymnasium. Still a junior college, Lindsey Wilson had an enrollment of but a few hundred students on a campus of less than a dozen buildings. That was almost a half-century ago. Pollock, who graduated from LWC in 1966, returned to his alma mater Saturday, February 8, 2014 for the first time in almost 50 years to watch the LWC-University of Pikeville (KY) basketball games at Biggers Sports Center. He was a guest of LWC women's basketball coach John B. Wethington, whose team treated Pollock to an 84-74 overtime win over the Bears. "It's been a vacation for me to come here to see these young people play basketball and see the progress Lindsey Wilson has made," Pollock said. Pollock, of Brandenburg, KY, was accompanied by his wife, Pam, son Brian and grandsons, Brendin, 13, and Brady, 10. He brought his Lindsey Wilson letterman's jacket, which still fits. "I wanted my grandsons to see where I went to college, and I also wanted to pay tribute to John Wethington by supporting his team," Pollock said. Pollock, who was a forward during his two years at Lindsey Wilson, played for LWC Athletic Hall of Fame basketball coach Don Green. "Our big wins that year were over Vincennes College of Indiana," said Pollock, who grew up in Irvington in Breckinridge County, KY. "They were our big rival in the conference, and we beat them twice (75-71 and 72-66) during the season." The 1965-66 LWC team went 19-6 and also advanced again to the first round National Junior College Athletic Association tournament regionals, played that year in Fayette, MO. By the mid-1960s, the LWC gymnasium had fallen into disrepair, so Green's Blue Raiders held most practices and all home games at what was then the Adair County High School gymnasium. "We maybe practiced in our gym four times each year, so we practiced there about eight times during my two years here," Pollock said. "It wasn't in very good condition, which is why we practiced so much at the high school gym. One of the toughest part about playing basketball at Lindsey Wilson back then was that we practiced at night because the high school team got the gym during the day." Men's basketball was the only varsity sport at Lindsey Wilson in the 1960s. The college no longer awards letter jackets, but now has 23intercollegiate varsity teams, 12 of which are for female students. "I can't imagine all the sports activities now going on. It's unreal what they have done," Pollock said. Pollock graduated from LWC with a double major in biology and health/physical education. "I had some great science teachers at Lindsey Wilson," he said. After earning a bachelor's degree from then-Campbellsville (KY) College, Pollock enjoyed a 27-year career in Meade County, KY, schools, including 13 years as coach of the Meade County High School girls' basketball team.
