Travel: Salt supply - A trending topic this week The District 4 Status: New supplies are coming in, but there is a need to use is wisely as demand skyrockets and reserves used statewide decrease rapidly. By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer KY Transportation Cabinet, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (February 7, 2014) - District 4 counties do have salt. We are receiving already purchased stock from our reserve supply out of Louisville and we have been purchasing new stock all along, so we are seeing new supply trickle in. All that being said, it is becoming more difficult to get new orders as demand skyrockets and reserves (used statewide) decrease rapidly. We are using our supply wisely. On a positive note, we have the ability to share and move salt from different facilities across the 11 county district as needed. Though we still have salt, if continual rounds of snow and ice keep coming as they have the past week, our situation will become more critical. Should supplies become lower, one of our conserving measures is to salt only higher volume/main routes. We want area motorists to realize this potential conservation action BEFORE it happens. We will be watching forecasts very closely through the weekend and into next week. - Chris Jessie This story was posted on 2014-02-07 10:56:04
