Basketball: Indians defeat Nelson County 49-46; girls lose 42-44 Indians win a thriller as Nelson County three-point try at the buzzer, which would have put game in OT, misses. Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com The Adair County Indians bounced back from Thursday night's loss to Russell County with a come from behind 49-46 victory over the Nelson County Cardinals. The win improved the Indians record to 12-7 on the season. The Tribe fell behind 16-3 to start the game before going on a 22-5 run to go up 25-21. The Cardinals scored the final 5 point of the half including a desperation three to go ahead 26-25 at halftime. The Indians edged ahead 38-36 after three periods. The Indians led 45-41 late in the final period before Nelson scored 5 straight points to take a 46-45 lead with 30 seconds remaining. The Indians came out of a time and senior point guard Matt Fudge connected on a 17 foot jumper with 17 seconds remaining to put Adair up 47-46. Freshman forward Chance Melton rebounded a Nelson County missed shot with 7 seconds remaining and then calmly sank 2 free throws to give the Indians a 49-46 lead. The Cardinals missed on a three point try at the buzzer that would have put the game in overtime. The Indians placed three players in double figures. Melton scored 15 including 7 for 7 from the charity stripe, Ty Bennett 13, and Fudge 10. Rounding out the scoring were Marshall Shelley 5, Jacob Pooler 3, and Zach Hutchison 3. Senior forward Jake Hixson turned in a solid defensive performance. The Adair County Lady Indians narrowly lost 42-44, but remain well on the winning side for with a season record 9-7.
