Being fit: Sedentary lifestyles change everything

Comments re article 64698 Carol Perkins I have joined the world of physical fitness

By Linda Marcum Waggener

Good luck to Carol with her tracking, it's supposed to be very helpful. I learn that over and over each time I track exercise and suddenly realize how much I don't do yet!!

My very trim Mom and I were discussing exercise one day and the differences in childhood habits. Dad brought home our first television when I was in grade school and it was the first thing my brother and I did when we got in from school, grab a snack and be still in front of the entertainment.

In comparison, Mom said that when she was child needing an after school snack, she climbed a pear tree or apple tree or cherry tree and snacked.

Then she followed her older siblings around the farm "bugging them," moving along with their work on chores, exercising her limbs and her mouth which they always teased her about.

With today's sedentary lifestyles, I guess it takes something like a FitBit to help us see how much is yet to be done. - Linda
