COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson football team received the 2013-2014 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award at the American Football Coaches' Association Convention in Indianapolis, IN, on Sunday, January 12.

"Our athletic department and football program emphasize the NAIA's Champions of Character initiative with our student-athletes on a consistent basis and it's a great honor to have those efforts recognized," said head coach Chris Oliver. "Our young men should be proud that their character and actions have allowed our football program to receive this prestigious award from the NAIA. We have built our program with the vision of winning both on and off the field, and this is further evidence that our vision is coming to life."

Lindsey Wilson football has been a part of many campus events since beginning the program in 2010. The team has been active in the "Be the Match" bone marrow program, food pantry drives as well as multiple service days in Columbia including Lindsey Wilson's own Malvina Farkle Day.

The Blue Raider football team also reaches out to the community in the summer when they host camps for future student-athletes on campus. They introduce them to the Five Core Values of the NAIA to help give the student-athlete an understanding of what the program is built around.

"We are very proud of the football team's recognition with the champions of character team award," said Abe Cross, campus Character Liaison. "The coaching staff is very committed to mentoring our football student-athletes in all five core values; respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. This award acknowledges their hard work and is a fine example of how our young men act both on and off the field. I admire them for their efforts and they are very deserving of this great award."

The Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Awards are presented at the end of the season for each of the NAIA's 23 championship sports. Teams that receive this prestigious award demonstrate in every day decisions integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. These institutions and athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

"I'm really excited that our team was recognized with this award for their hard work," said community outreach coordinator and defensive coach Mike Gutelius. "This group of young men has shown great character with their willingness to take on these projects and has exhibited true ownership by the enthusiasm they showed through their service. I am proud that their efforts were acknowledged by the NAIA with this honor."

A single team is selected for each of the NAIA's 23 national championship sports by its respective coaches' association officers prior to each national championship. Five other schools received the award this fall with Lindsey Wilson -- Northwestern (IOWA) College (Men's Cross Country), Brescia (KY) University (Women's Cross Country), Vanguard (CA) University (Men's Soccer), Westmont (CA) College (Women's Soccer) and Oklahoma Baptist University (Volleyball). -Jay R.
