ACMS student rescues fawn from ice covered water

CM story courtesy news tip from Peg Schaeffer

A young fawn has a 7th grader at Adair County Middle School to thank for its life.

Alex Evans, of the Glens Fork area of Adair County was out walking in the woods when he saw the young deer run into an ice covered pool in a ravine. The fawn was thrashing about about, unable to get out on it's own, Alex's mother, Heather Evans, related.

Alex waded into the water - it wasn't very deep, his mother said - and pulled the fawn out.

"It ran into the woods, hopefully back to its mother," Mrs. Evans said. Alex didn't have time to get a towel and dry the deer or himself, nor did he have a camera to record any part of the rescue.

He was wet to his waist, but he did manage to walk the one-quarter of a mile back home and didn't suffer any consequence of the adventure - or misadventure. "We're not making a big thing out of it," Ms. Evans said. "We're glad for the deer, glad Alex loves animals as much as we do," she said, "but we've had some long talks about what might have happened - with one one else around when he went in the icy water.

She wasn't sure which day the episode occurred either, just that it was one day last week, when it was plenty cold. - CM
