LWC Wrestling takes second place at NWCA National Duals

Blue Raiders defeated No. 8 Cumberland before falling to No. 1 Grand View in the finals

DES MOINES, IOWA - The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team finished in second place at the NAIA National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Sunday at the Iowa Events Center.



The Blue Raiders defeated No. 8 Cumberland (TN) in the semifinals before falling to top-ranked and two-time defending NAIA national champion No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) in the finals.

No. 7 Lindsey Wilson opened the day with a 35-12 victory over fellow Mid-South Conference member Cumberland.

The Blue Raiders dominated in the early going, winning the first three matches of the dual to take a 14-0 lead. Myron Bradbury took a 12-2 major decision at 125 to begin the scoring for Lindsey Wilson. Keaton Thomas pinned Cumberland's Dalton Baysinger at 133, followed by Wismit Moinius taking an 11-0 major decision over Ethyn Holbrook at 141.

Lindsey Wilson suffered its first loss of the day at the 149 weight class after Isaac Thomas lost in a 9-5 decision to Jake Williams, who ranks fourth in the NAIA at 149 pounds. The Blue Raiders would bounce back at 157 when Joe Cozart pinned Michael Gonzalez, giving Lindsey Wilson a 20-3 lead.

Cumberland's Kirk Johnson defeated Mitchell Judkins with a 4-1 decision at the 165 class to cut the lead to 20-6. Lindsey Wilson would win the next two matches with an Erick Gomez pin at 174 and a 5-1 decision win by Jake Maupin at 184, to bring the lead to 29-6.

With the dual in hand, Lindsey Wilson elected to forfeit at the 197 weight class, followed by a Cumberland forfeit at the 285 class to bring the final score to 35-12 in favor of Lindsey Wilson.

Lindsey Wilson would fall in the finals of the tournament to Grand View 32-6. The Blue Raiders faced eight Grand View grapplers ranked in the top seven of the NAIA at their weight class, including four defending NAIA national champions.

The Vikings took control early by winning the first four matches of the dual. Bradbury suffered his first loss of the tournament when he fell in a 10-2 major decision to Ryak Finch, who ranks No. 2 in the NAIA at 125 pounds. Seventh-ranked Brandon Benvenuti defeated Keaton Thomas in a close 7-6 decision at 133, followed by top-ranked and defending national champion at 141 pounds Gustavo Martinez defeating Moinius in a close 2-1 decision. Stephen Myers would fall in a 6-1 decision to sixth-ranked Brandon Wright to give Grand View a 13-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson got on the board after top-ranked Cozart defeated second-ranked Quinten Hayes with a 4-2 overtime win at the 157 weight class. Cozart finished a perfect 4-0 at the tournament.

Defending champion Chad Lowman pinned Jake Maupin at 165, followed by defending champion Jimmie Schuessler defeating Gomez with a 7-5 decision at the 174 class to bring the Grand View lead to 22-3.

Lindsey Wilson won their second match of the dual on the strength of a 3-2 decision win by Jameel Bryant over Christian Mays at the 184 class. Bryant went undefeated at the duals with a 3-0 record.

Maupin would fall in a 9-1 major decision at the 197 class followed by Jonathan Hupp being pinned at the 285 class by top-ranked and defending champion Eric Thompson, bringing the final score to 32-6 in favor of the Vikings.
