2013 Farmers' Market Competitive Grant Program announces awards No farmers market permanent facilities grants in the 7-county CM area. Metcalfe, Taylor groups receive grants in other areas. Click on headine for complete story Adapted from State of KY news service FRANKFORT, KY (Dec. 20, 2013) - On Friday, December 20, 2013, the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB), chaired by Governor Steve Beshear, approved $1,246,045 for 19 agricultural diversification projects across the Commonwealth during its December board meeting at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office. Among these grants were four for construction of permanent facilities for Farmers Markets. The Farmers' Market Competitive Grant Program is competitive grant program which provides an opportunity for local farmers' markets to access state Kentucky Agricultural Development Funds for the construction of new permanent facilities for their markets or expansion of existing markets, as well as marketing and development resources. Receiving grants on Friday were the following: $114,391 - Mercer County Fair & Horse Show Inc.Other State and regional investments included: On-line Equine Database ProEquine LLC was approved for $8,000 in state and county funds for the development of a web-accessible, secure equine database. This project will enable farm managers to upload important information that equine owners can access, facilitating the timely transfer of vital information between farm managers and equine owners. Value-Added Processing & Distribution Facility Development The Weekly Juicery LLC (TWJ) was approved for $310,000 in state funds in the form of a $235,000 loan and a $75,000 grant to renovate a centralized manufacturing and distribution facility for its juice and raw foods production. A portion of the funding will also be used in the renovation of a second retail facility for TWJ. TWJ will purchase vegetables and other produce from Growing Warriors and other Kentucky producers for value-added processing. County investments approved included: 4-H Livestock Barn The Fayette County 4-H Council Inc. was approved for $60,945 in Fayette County funds to construct a livestock barn for the Fayette County 4-H Livestock Club. The facility will house project animals of the club and will be built adjacent to the Agriculture Pavilion on the Bluegrass Fairgrounds at Masterson Station Park. Environmental Stewardship The Deceased Farm Animal Removal Program serves as a measure to facilitate the coordination of environmentally sound and cost-effective disposal of deceased livestock for Kentucky producers. One Deceased Farm Animal Removal Program was approved Harrison County in the amount of $7,500. Heifer Chain The Taylor County Cattlemen's Association Inc. was approved for $15,000 in Taylor County Funds to implement a youth heifer chain for beef and dairy. The program is available to youth ages 9 to 15. Female calves produced through the program are donated back the association to continue the program. Kentucky Proud Retail Market Nona's Downtown Market LLC was approved for $5,000 in Daviess County funds. Funds will be used for refrigeration and display equipment and an alarm system for this retail facility that specializes in Kentucky Proud products and foods. The facility includes a food market, gift shop, delicatessen and country-style restaurant - all featuring Kentucky Proud foods.
