Former Blue Raider Alonso Signs with Normal (IL) CornBelters Alonso ranks third in Lindsey Wilson program history with 91 hits in a single-season By Charles Balcom COLUMBIA, KY - Former Lindsey Wilson baseball standout Manny Alonso has signed to play with the Frontier League's Normal CornBelters of Normal, IL. Alonso helped Lindsey Wilson advance to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in 2013 and was named the Mid-South Conference player of the year his senior season as well as earning NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors. He was named to the All-Mid-South Conference First-Team in 2012 and 2013. The San Diego, CA, native led the Blue Raiders during the 2013 season with a batting average of .419 and finished tied for the team lead with 48 RBIs. He also led the Mid-South Conference in batting average, hits (91) and hits per game (1.49). His 91 hits are the third most all-time on the Lindsey Wilson single-season list. Nationally, Alonso finished 2013 third in the NAIA in hits and sixth in batting average. Alonso capped his two-year Lindsey Wilson career with a .397 batting average -- fourth best on the program's all-time list - and 99 RBIs. "I am extremely excited for Manny to get an opportunity to play in this professional baseball league," said Lindsey Wilson baseball coach Jonathan Burton. "His work ethic is unmatched and is demonstrated on a daily basis." "I have never been around a more decorated and consistent player. My hope is that he will continue to improve and grow around some great players, which will be a springboard for bigger things in the future." The CornBelters are a member of the Frontier League, the oldest active independent baseball league. Other league members include the Evansville Otters, Florence Freedom and Rockford Aviators. - Charles Balcom, Lindsey Wilson College This story was posted on 2013-12-17 04:12:20
