Remembers vocational school in Celina, TN High School students built a house each year and sold it at the end of the term. He thinks this had a lot to do with how quickly the Honest Abe packaged home company in Moss, TN, grew to be one of the biggest in the U.S. By Ralph Roy Waggener Publisher, It's Just for a Smile News I wish I could have attended the vocational school support meeting but I have been sick with a sinus infection and did not feel like getting out. Years ago when I was running The Clay Statesman in Celina, TNm The Clay County School System had a vocational school. What I remember the most was that each year the Vocational School students built a house and sold it at the end of the school year. A master carpenter who really knew the building trade ran this program. A lot of young people grew up knowing a lot about building. Honest Abe Log Homes was started about the same year I started working with Mthe Clay Statesman and was located just west of Moss, TN, about 3 miles, I think. I can't but believe that these carpenter building skills learned by a lot of Clay County youngsters had a lot to do in making Honest Abe Log Homes one of the biggest package home builders in the US. I support this vocational school idea. But I also remember the years of the Somerset Vocational Printing School which was run by someone who did not know anything about printing and was a waste of time and money, so it's very important to have teachers who know the skills they are teaching. Printing like carpentry is learned by doing type of education and needs to be taught by people who have the right experience.
