COLUMBIA, KY - Three Lindsey Wilson College students were recognized Tuesday night for being trashy dressers.

The three students were winners in the college's inaugural "Trashion Show," held in V.P. Henry Auditorium:

The winners were:
  • Trashiest Costume: Matt Abel of Elizabethtown, KY, who made a gladiator's uniform from a broken brook, cardboard boxes, plastic drink bottles, a Styrofoam cooler, duct tape, tabs from soda cans and shrink wrap.

  • Best-Dressed Female: Chelsea King of Burkesville, KY, who made a dress out of duct tape, cardboard boxes and plastic bags.

  • Best-Dressed Male: Arlis Dople of Sturgis, KY, who made a costume of trash bags, cardboard and compact discs.
Staged by the LWC Office of Sustainability and Student Activities Office, the event was designed to get students to think about creative ways to recycle and reuse items they normally discard, according to Campus Sustainability Director Douglas Keaton.

"The point is for students to realize that so many things they use only once can be used several times and for several purposes," said LWC Director of Student Activities Jayne Hopkins, who coordinated and organized the "Trashion Show." "We obviously don't expect students to start wearing dresses made of plastic bags they get at the store, but we hope they won't automatically throw them out but instead think of how they can use them again or minimize the impact they have on landfills." - DUANE BONIFER, Lindsey Wilson College
