Billy Joe Fudge: Our Downtown is Curate's Egg

Commentary: The good side and the bad side of what's going on - and why the situation must be addressed in its entirety.

By Billy Joe Fudge

Our Downtown is a Curate's Egg. We definitely have some good things going on and we definitely have some bad things going on.

On the good side of things, there are existing businesses which are hanging on, along with Red Brick Studios, the Cafe on the Square and TaPs which are recent additions in varying degrees to the Downtown commercial and cultural scene. Additionally, the Courthouse is getting much needed attention from our community with financial support from Fiscal Court and others.

On the bad side of things, many vacant buildings continue to deteriorate in structural integrity and are daily becoming more of an architectural eyesore and blight on our Downtown.

However, it appears we are taking one step forward while sliding two steps backward. The situation is somewhat like the old adage. "What do you get when you put a spoonful of wine in a barrel of manure? You get a barrel of manure." And then, "what do you get if you put a spoonful of manure in a barrel of wine? You get a barrel of manure."

The long and the short of it are; we must address the problems of our Downtown in their entirety, as a whole, and not just one spoonful at a time. That means we need a strategy that identifies deficiencies, possible solutions to correct those deficiencies and then establishes a roadmap to guide us to ultimate success. - BILLY JOE FUDGE
