LWC Wrestling finishes with 1-2 record at Wolfpack Duals

Blue Raiders defeated UNC-Pembroke but fell to NC State and Gardner-Webb

RALEIGH, NC - The Lindsey Wilson College wrestling team finished 1-2 at the Wolfpack Duals hosted by North Carolina State University on Sunday, November 24, 2013.

Lindsey Wilson (1-2) defeated NCAA Division II member UNC-Pembroke to start the day, but fell to NCAA Division I members North Carolina State University and Gardner-Webb University (NC).



The first dual of the day saw the Blue Raiders take on the Braves of UNC-Pembroke. Lindsey Wilson took a 3-0 lead after Felix Casa del Valle took a 7-2 decision over Dontae Brown to open the match. The Braves tied it up 3-3 after a close 9-7 decision by Pembroke's Cole Murray over Gus Adams.

The 141 weight class saw the Braves take the lead at 7-3 after Daniel Ownbey took a 15-3 major decision over Wismit Moinius. Lindsey Wilson's Stephen Myers took a 10-6 decision over Eric Milks at the 149 weight class to cut the lead to 7-6.

Lindsey Wilson would take the lead after Zack McCormick pinned Justin Pencock at the 157 weight class to give the Blue Raiders a 12-7 lead. Cadyn McKeeth followed with a pin of his own at 165 to push the lead to 18-7.

Erick Gomez lost a close 2-1 decision at the 174 class before Jameel Bryant took a 14-4 major decision over Ridge White to give Lindsey Wilson a 22-10 lead.

The Braves' Brach Walker took a 7-4 decision over Jake Maupin at 197 followed by a Chris Giddens 4-1 decision over Lindsey Wilson's Ameer Daniels at the 285 class, but the Blue Raider lead proved to be too large to overcome as Lindsey Wilson took the dual 22-16.

The second match of the day saw the Blue Raiders take on North Carolina State. The Wolfpack jumped out to an early 12-0 lead after back-to-back pins on Casa del Valle at 125 and Gus Adams at 133. NC State extended that lead after Sam Speno defeated Moinius in a close 4-2 decision at the 141 class.

Lindsey Wilson got on the scoreboard after Myers took a 10-6 decision over Brian Hamann to make the score 15-3. McCormick was pinned at the 157 class followed by an 8-5 decision win by McKeeth at 165 to make the score 21-6. NC State's Pete Renda took an 11-2 major decision over Erick Gomez at the 174 class.

Jameel Bryant pinned Michael Macchiavello at the 184 class to cut the Wolfpack lead to 25-12. The Blue Raiders were unable to score again as Thomas Buckman lost in a 7-4 decision at 197 and Daniels was pinned in the heavyweight class, giving NC State the 34-12 victory.

The final dual saw the Blue Raiders take on the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University. Lindsey Wilson got off to slow start as Casa del Valle opened the match with a 4-3 decision loss at 125, followed by Adams being pinned at 133. Moinius fell in a 7-0 decision at the 141 class to Ryan Mosely.

Stephen Myers suffered his first loss of the day in a closely contested 7-6 loss via decision at 149. McCormick and McKeeth suffered pins in the 157 and 165 class followed by a disqualification by Gomez at 174.

Even though Lindsey Wilson trailed 33-0 in the match, the Blue Raiders would not call it a day and continued to fight.

Jameel Bryant got the Blue Raiders on the scoreboard with a 3-2 decision over Gray Jones at the 184 class. Jake Maupin kept up the intensity as he pinned the Bulldogs' Boyce Conwell to make it 33-9. Ameer Daniels gave Lindsey Wilson a win in their final match of the dual as he took an 11-3 major decision over Aaron Rabin at the 285 class. - Charles Balcom, Lindsey Wilson College
