Joyce Coomer: Wants tip for sighting speeders I have no idea who these mysterious speeding drivers are as I haven't yet seen any. Could someone tell me the most appropriate time of day to be on the square so I can observe them? - JOYCE COOMER By Joyce Coomer Personal commentary by the writer I just finished eating lunch -- a Happy Meal from McDonald's. To get to McDonald's from downtown Columbia, I drove onto the square from Campbellsville Street. No speeders there . . . traffic was barely moving. On my way back, I drove onto the square from Jamestown Street. No speeders there . . . traffic was barely moving due to nearly every driver coming to a full stop at the YIELD sign and waiting for an unusual amount of time before driving onto the square when there was plenty of room for them to go forward without fear of causing an accident (Vehicles were coming off the square onto Jamestown Street, not going around the square to Campbellsville or Greensburg streets.) or hitting a pedestrian (of which I saw none on the square, going or coming); the best I can figure is that these drivers were waiting on a freight train which shore ain't gonna appear in downtown Columbia . . . I make at least four trips a day around the square. I haven't seen any speeders (unless I am considered one as I drive from 15-20 mph around the square, depending on traffic -- vehicle and pedestrian). I have no idea when there are speeders on the square nor whom these speeding drivers are that some people in the community are complaining about. I have more trouble getting around the square because of inordinately slow drivers than I have worries about someone driving too fast. I have waited as long as 10 minutes to get from the end of Adams Alley to the square (off Campbellsville Street) because everyone was stopping completely at the YIELD sign and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting before they would drive onto the square -- why? Who knows? Maybe they were waiting until they saw absolutely NO other vehicles on the square (moving or parked) before they considered it an opportune time to drive onto the square, I have no idea who these mysterious speeding drivers are as I haven't yet seen any. Could someone tell me the most appropriate time of day to be on the square so I can observe them? - Joyce M. Coomer This story was posted on 2013-11-22 18:02:07
