Poetry by Wiilie M. Feese, Jr.: The funeral of JFK

The funeral of JFK Willie M Feese Jr
We left Columbia 50 years ago
I remember it like it was yesterday
We rode in Ralph Waggener's VW
To attend the funeral of JFK

There was Arthur Corbin, Kenneth Royse, Ralph and me
It was a cold November day
We just couldn't stay at home
Our homage to our President we had to pay

We stood in line along the route
The procession took that day
A throng of mourning people
lined the streets along the way
I'll never forget the events that week
That led to our foray
It was a time in history
In which a tiny part we had to play.

--Willie M Feese Jr
Photos from that trip are being prepared for posting, and Ralph Waggener has written the prose narrative of the trip, now posted as Where were you when JFK died? - Ralph Waggener's story - CM

The trip from Columbia to JFK funeral

2013-11-22 - Washington, DC area - Photo by Willie M. Feese, JR. Four young men, three of them teens made the pilgrimmage from Columbia to Washington to pay tribute John F. Kennedy. The photo was taken in Arlington Cemetery on Monday, November 25, 2013. The four, Junior Feese, Arthur Corbin, Kenneth Royse, and Ralph Waggener drove Ralph's blue Volkswagen Beetle - the one he used to deliver all of Columbia's Courier-Journals and Louisville Times, straight through via Middlesboro, KY, Jonesville, and Bristol and from there, something of a blur, with much of the driving in the night. They thought they were late, but got there in time to see the longest procession of black limousines and the most heads of state ever assembled in one place. It was an experience none of them would ever forget. (Photo from collection of Ralph Waggener) - EW
