Wonders about promise by city to correct speeding problem 'I was promised that a citizen committee that might serve to prevent needless injuries and deaths would be set up to study these and other Downtown safety issues. And as you might have again guessed; no sign of that promised committee.' - BJF By Billy Joe Fudge Many of you who keep up with local news might remember that I addressed a city council meeting a couple of years ago with a short dissertation about the range of speed limits on streets leading into and around the Square, cars sprinting across crosswalks and two lanes of traffic racing around the Square. I was promised that the speed limit conundrum would be looked into and corrected. And you guessed it; zero, nothing, nil, zilch, naught, zip, nix, not a thing has been done. I was promised that a citizen committee that might serve to prevent needless injuries and deaths would be set up to study these and other Downtown safety issues. And as you might have again guessed; no sign of that promised committee. Now the intersection of Burkesville and Hudson Streets which handles thousands of vehicles daily has been without a caution and stop light for a couple of weeks.God forbid that additional injuries or deaths might occur due to the negligence of our elected leaders but should it happen, can they escape the shame of their neglect and inattention. Also, could it be that their obvious disregard for public safety issues of which they are aware, subject them to possible law suits and or criminal prosecutions? On Facebook, at Walmart and around town daily we lament the slackness of our economy, the demise of our Downtown and the general malaise, melancholy and funk into which our community has slipped. Well until we demand more from ourselves and from our elected leaders, I can safely say that our situation will continue to be in the doldrums. - Billy Joe Fudge This story was posted on 2013-11-22 04:20:42
