I was honored to chauffer two outstanding Casey County residents which were Tony York and his Dad, Anthony York. Before the ceremony, we drove to the nearby Wolf River United Methodist Church and the adjacent cemetery. The Wolf River United Methodist Church was established in 1840 in the Wolf River Valley of Tennessee. The adjacent cemetery is the final resting place of some of the areas early settlers including Conrad "Coonrod" Pile. The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is Charlie Paul who was buried in 1826. This was also the home church of World War I Hero Sgt. Alvin C. York who is credited with single-handedly capturing 132 German soldiers and killing 28 more in the Argonne Forrest. For his actions, Sgt. York was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the French Croix de Guerre. Sgt. York and several members of his family rest in the adjacent cemetery. By the way, Tony and Anthony are cousins of Sgt. York. - Lee Murphy This story was posted on 2013-11-21 16:38:26
