MSC Soccer: Lindsey Wilson Women win 2013 Title Hurd's Golden Goal (Soccer's "Sudden Death" equivalent - first score in overtime) gives Lindsey Wilson Women's Soccer MSC Tournament title Click on headline for story with photo(s). Blue Raiders' next destination in NAIA National Tournament will be announced on Monday, November 18, 2013 By Chris Wells COLUMBIA, KY - Renee Hurd scored a golden goal 27 seconds into overtime to lift the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Cumberland (TN) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament championship match on Friday, November 15, 2013, at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Holloway Drive, Columbia, KY. The second-seeded Blue Raiders (18-3) earn the Mid-South's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament. Top-seeded Cumberland (15-3-1) should earn an at-large bid into the national tournament. Hurd scored from point-blank range off Ayaki Shinada's second assist of the night to give the Blue Raiders the tournament title. Cumberland never possessed the ball in the extra period. After briefly playing the ball back into its own half of the field to start the overtime period, Lindsey Wilson quickly went on the attack. Shinada took the ball from a back line pass and laid it off to Natasha Gensetter who played it directly back to Shinada. Following a couple of dribbles, Shinada played a perfect pass onto Hurd's boot just outside the six-yard box. Hurd chipped it over Cumberland goalkeeper Lindsay Kitson -- who was charging off her line towards Hurd -- and into the back of the net for the 2-1 win. With the win, No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson avenges a 1-0 regular season loss at Cumberland in Lebanon, Tenn. on Oct. 16. Lindsey Wilson needed a come-from-behind effort to force the extra frame. Cumberland's Taylor Nay put the No. 7-ranked Bulldogs in front in the 66th minute. Nay scored off a 30-yard free kick following a Lindsey Wilson foul. Nay hit a laser to the right side of the goal past Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Johanna Henrikson for the 1-0 lead. It took the Blue Raiders nearly 20 minutes to notch the equalizer. Shinada was once again the facilitator. She took a pass at the top of the D and turned to her left to find Alice Coyne streaking down the left side of the penalty box. Coyne one-timed the pass into the lower right corner past Kitson to tie the match at 1-1 with 5:45 left in regulation. Lindsey Wilson finished out-shooting the Bulldogs 12-4 for the match. Kitson ended with four saves compared to one from Henrikson. Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland will learn their opponents and destinations when the NAIA National Tournament bracket is announced on Monday, November 18, 2013. - Chris Wells, Lindsey Wilson College This story was posted on 2013-11-16 01:24:54
