Pam Hancock: McDonald's, changed America's eating out habits The story of McDonald's in a capsule was delivered by Pam Hancock at the October meeting of the Chamber. Tomorrow, a major charity supported by McDonald's will have the 6th Annual Ronald McDonald House wish List Donation Drive, 3pm-6pmCT, Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville Street, back parking lot. WISH LIST By Pam Hancock from Chamber Insights, October 2013 At age 52 when most people look toward retirement--Ray Kroc founded a company that revolutionized the food industry and changed America's eating-out habits. In 1954, he acquired franchising rights from the McDonald brothers for their San Bernardino, California-based chain of hamburger restaurants and founded McDonald's Corp. in 1955. Today, McDonald's has more than 30,000 restaurants in over 100 international markets. His belief was that he had to help individual McDonald's operators succeed in every way he could. Their success would ensure his success. His belief paid off: Today more than 80 percent of the McDonald's 13,700 U.S. restaurants are independently owned and operated by local franchisees. In 1961 Ray launched a training program called Hamburger University. Today more than 80,000 people have graduated from the program. As our charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities was founded in 1974 to provide support for families whose children are receiving medical care. Located in 59 countries, its mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. At McDonald's we celebrate the simple joy of giving. Whether the gift is of more hugs and kisses, a bed and a warm meal, just steps from the hospital, or the gift of more time for parents to spend with their sick child, our support of RMHC strengthens millions of families a year so they can help their child heal. As a separate non-profit organization, RMHC and its local Chapters rely on the generous donations of both corporate and individual donors.
