Max and Dr. Heather Wise will always remember RMH 'We are sending this letter via Pam Hancock who is helping with the Adair and Russell County Ronald McDonald House charity drive. Heather and I have attached our letter as parents who stayed at the Ronald McDonald House during the time that our son, Carter underwent chemo treatments and surgery for cancer. I am submitting this story as a father and a childhood cancer advocate. This story hits close to home for us as parents of a childhood cancer survivor. - MAX WISE Click on headline for story with photo. The 6th Annual Ronald McDonald House wish List Donation Drive is being held held 3pm-6pmCT, Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville Street, back parking lot. WISH LIST By Max & Dr. Heather Wise We see them all the time. At a restaurant....at the grocery store...or at the gas station. For most, the thought of throwing in loose change to the jars or buckets on the countertop is minimal. But for others, they are willing to empty all pockets and a wallet based off of their first hand account or the memory of a loved one who was personally affected by tragedy and had to occupy a room at the Ronald McDonald House. Our family, like countless others, were one of those such families who resided at the Louisville Ronald McDonald House in the fall of 2007. Our third child, Carter, was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma (an aggressive children's cancer affecting the nervous system) at the age of 6 months. Carter was treated at Kosair's Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY where he underwent multiple surgeries and 13 rounds of chemotherapy for a tumor that began in his adrenal gland but had spread throughout his liver, bone and bone marrow. It was during this time that the Ronald McDonald House became a "home away from home" for us and Carter's grandparents. As a family we were able to see up close the countless numbers of volunteers and hours given up by groups and individuals ranging from church groups, to Girl Scout troops to school volleyball teams throughout the Commonwealth who make the Ronald McDonald House what it is. The Ronald McDonald House provides comfort, necessities, solidarity and hope to those families who need it the most. Since our time spent at the Ronald McDonald House, we have also seen or have learned of others in our community who have relied on the support and haven of the Ronald McDonald House. We are grateful to those who give so graciously of their time, energy & resources in helping to support the Ronald McDonald House, a place that provides a welcoming place of rest to those who hear unimaginable news. Our son is now 6 years old and only travels once a year for a check-up with his oncologist and is nearing the 5-year mark of remission when he can be released to his family pediatrician. If it were not for the Ronald McDonald House programs across the country to comfort and provide, our struggles would have been magnified. Thanks again to all of those who help support the Ronald McDonald House program. God Bless, - Max & Dr. Heather Wise This story was posted on 2013-10-23 07:49:29
