By Greg Thomas, Adair Co. Emergency Disaster Director

Adair County emergency services conducted a full scale county exercise on Tuesday afternoon, October 22, 2013. The exercise was announced, but it still carried an element of realism that may have made many think, at least for a time, it was an actual disaster. It wasn't but it did make the community much more ready to handle such and event.

In the past the county's conducted exercises dealing with school incidents, bombs, earthquakes, and other events. The scenario for this exercise was intense sky to ground lightning strikes at the Lindsey Wilson Athletic Complex.

There were approximately twenty different victims of the lightning scenarios from minor injuries to deceased victims.

Scenarios such as these are worked through so that emergency services are better prepared when the county faces dramatic real life emergencies.

Victims were treated on the scene, flown out by Air Evac, transported to Westlake Hospital and to Lindsey Wilson Nursing Facility.

Adair County Emergency Management would like to thank Lindsey Wilson College for the use of their Facility, and the following organizations for participating; Kentucky State Police, Kentucky State Fire Marshall, Air Evac, Westlake Hospital, Lindsey Wilson Nursing, Adair County EMS, Columbia/Adair County Fire Department, Adair County Sheriff Department, Adair County Search and Rescue, Columbia Police Department, Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department, Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department, HazMat 12, and Lake Cumberland Regional Health Department. - Greg Thomas, Adair County Emergency Medical Director
