Marlene Hamby: Adamant that Columbia should preserve great old building

A new to Columbia preservation makes grand statement: As a brand new member of this wonderful community, one of the first things we discovered as we came here was the absolutely enthralling Square - MARLENE HAMBY

Commentary

Regarding the comment from Mr. McQueary's solution to condemn and tear down the old buildings from Columbia's square:

He obviously has no understanding that every time an historic (old, and in disrepair) building or home is torn down, there are only fewer left - never more.

Please explain to me why tearing down, removing a whole community's history and memories is, in any way, an improvement. There is nothing charming nor reminiscent about a new building. "New" should never be allowed on such a precious and historic piece of property!

As a brand new member of this wonderful community, one of the first things we discovered as we came here was the absolutely enthralling Square. There is a grand story behind each crumbling brick. A story of all those men and women who came before us to create the grand little town we are now so privileged to call "home."

The citizens of Columbia should be compelled to preserve every piece of their heritage - not destroy it! That would be a very sad day, indeed. - Marlene Hamby
