By Chris Megginson/Campbellsville University PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL - Campbellsville University women's and men's golf hit the links Monday morning, Oct. 21 in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Tournament at The Hombre Gulf Club, 120 Coyote Pass, Panama City Beach, FL. Day one of the two-day women's tournament and three-day men's tournament begins with the CU women taking the first five tee times Monday morning, October 21, 2013 from 7:30amCT/8:30amET. until 9:06amCT/10:06amET. until 7/06amCT/8:06amET on the Hombre's Bad course. CU is teamed up with Shorter University (GA) and Oklahoma Christian University. The men's tournament will begin at 10:10amCT/11:10amET. with the first Tiger teeing off in the first five slots. CU will be paired with Bethel University (IN) and Emmanuel College on both the Bad and the Ugly courses. The Lady Tigers are making their second appearance in three years in the NCCAA Invitational, while the Tigers take their team to the NCCAA Championships for the sixth straight year. Led by freshman Cassidy Scantland, CU's women received an invitation earlier this month after winning the Don Bishop Invitational at Campbellsville Country Club. "I'm proud of our ladies. They have competed extremely hard this fall season and to be rewarded to go to the NCCAA Invitational is a tremendous honor. We have worked to sharpen our game to go down there to compete to the best of our ability," said Brent Vernon, second-year head coach for CU women's golf. "It's a great honor for our ladies, and it shows the time they have put forth." CU will field an all-freshman line-up, being one of the youngest teams at the tournament. Scantland of Greensburg, KY, will tee off first, followed by Anna Marie Hyatt of Lawrenceburg, KY, Olivia Parrott of Greensburg, KY, Ashley Goodin of Columbia, KY, and Grace Gupton of Louisville, KY. The Lady Tigers' last appearance in the tournament was a fifth-place finish in the inaugural NCCAA Women's Golf Invitational in 2011. "It is going to be a fun, tough challenge for us. It's a great course with great teams," Vernon said. "It will be a great test for our freshmen to get the experience of playing in a national tournament and use this time to continue to grow as a unit." When the NCCAA announced bids earlier in the fall, initially only Tiger golfer Michael Newton drew a bid to compete in the NCCAA Men's Golf Championships, but the entire team worked its way in weeks later. "Michael has had a very consistent fall, and he has worked very hard on and off the course. His hard work has paid off to being a leader on the course ... I am very proud of him and look forward to coaching the team in the NCCAAs," said Kenny Lawson, CU men's coach. Brandon Collier of Lexington, KY, will lead the Tigers with the first tee time, followed by Lukas Kvaavik of Stockholm, Sweden, Cody Goodwin of Portland, TN, Tanner Hall of Lexington, KY, and Newton of Bowling Green, KY. Campbellsville's men's team has finished in the Top 10 three of the last five years at the NCCAA Championships, placing fifth in 2008 and 2010 and eighth in 2009. The Tigers finished 12th of 18 teams last year. - Chris MegginsonEVENTS Campbellsville University Women's Golf at the NCCAA National Invitational, Monday-Tuesday, October 21-22, 2013 (tee times for CU 6:30amCT/7:30amET, Monday) at The Hombre Golf Club, 120 Coyote Pass, Panama City Beach, FL 32407.
