CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Greensburg native Jonathan Lobb made himself feel at home this weekend in Phillips Lanes, claiming top prize at the fifth annual Green River Classic and leading host Campbellsville University to a second-place finish.

"It means a lot. Our team really came together. We did really well as a team and that helped me get the win," Lobb said. "I really wanted us to win the whole tournament. We struggled last year as a team. I feel like the chemistry is so much better this year, and we just came together. This is a good way to start off our entire season. Hopefully we can continue our success on the road."

Lobb was one of three Campbellsville bowlers to place in the Top 10, topping 246 in his third of five team games on Saturday. He beat University of Louisville's Justin Brown by 14 pins (1048-1034) and averaged 209.6 to win the top medal.

"Jonathan is well known around here, and works at the lanes. This is a really good moment for him to get the recognition that he deserves. I'm really proud of him," said CU bowling coach John Rausch.

The win is only Lobb's second tournament win at his home bowling alley, having also won the open amateur Subway Shootout in 2007.

"My team kept me in check to make sure I didn't get ahead of myself and start thinking about things. Staying in the moment is what helped me get the win," Lobb said.

Joining Lobb in the Top 10 were Chris Nunez and Rryan Bremer, who finished tied for eighth with 973 pins each, an average of 194.6.

Bremer bowled a 246 in his second game to post the highest individual score of the tournament until Lobb matched it in the third game. CU posted 1,094 pins as a team in the third game, the most by any team in the tournament, to push toward the top of the team standings.

By day's end on Saturday, Campbellsville worked its way past Louisville and the University of Pikeville to lead the tournament by 24 pins.

"It was a little bit of a surprise to see us move into first-place over night, because that was a big jump for us," Rausch said. "I've known we had the talent but in the past we've dealt with issues. They're really coming together and were really ready to go and were supporting each other to do their best."

On Sunday, the tournament consisted of 12 Baker games. Campbellsville maintained its lead over UPike throughout the day, but the University of Louisville's pushed past the Tigers by three pins in the eighth Baker game. CU reclaimed the lead by eight pins with a 194 score in its 10th Baker game, but the Cardinals posted a 414 pins in the final two games to Campbellsville's 384. The Cardinals held off the host Tigers for a 22-pin victory, 7,117 to 7,095.

The result was only the second time the Tigers have finished runner-up or better in the program's five years. CU was also runner-up at the Union Bulldog Classic in January 2012.

In women's action, Campbellsville finished fifth among 15 total teaems (12 varsity programs) after starting the tournament in 13th place.

"The girls did very well today. We had a few slumps here and there, but all-in-all fifth place in this group is tremendous going up against Louisville, Pikeville and this new team Emmanuel. Where we fell down was just some common mistakes, but we stayed together as a team. I'm pleased to start the season," said Rausch.

CU bowled a 768 team score in the first round Saturday morning to start the two-day tournament ranked 13th among 15 varsity and JV teams. The Lady Tigers bounced back to average 863 team points per round over the next four team games to move into fifth among varsity teams.

Kaylee Kaminski helped lead the rally, bowling 213 in the second game and 215 in the fifth on Saturday to place 14th individually among 104 bowlers. Her five-game average was 182.4 .Chelsey Stephens was 17th with an average of 178.2 and max score of 200 in the third game.

Campbellsville is in its fifth season as a men's and women's bowling program and opens its season every year with the Green River Classic at home in Phillips Lanes, something Rausch is grateful for.

"I'm really thankful for Phillips Lanes. Our restaurant workers here put out a lot of food. These tournaments are long. They're long enough for us, but especially those that work here," Rausch said. "There aren't many teams that have the relationship like we have. I've talked with several other coaches, and they have to travel long distances for their lanes and are limited on how much practice they get in."

The tournament also counts as a regular season Mid-South Conference event, placing Campbellsville first in the early season men's standings ahead of Pikeville and fourth in the women's standings. - Chris Megginson
