Confessions of a reformed goldenrod/ragweed flower peddler

Shades of Willard Walton and the World Famous Sassafras Tea Factory in LaFayette, TN! - How an elderly customer set him and Sanger Stabler on the straight and narrow path, selling sassafras roots for 10 cents a bag - and made successful entrepreneurs of them. With comments on NIMBYism
Comments re article 62223 Victoria Pike Goldenrod field next needs mowing
By Jon Halsey

In defense of Ms. Pike, I reckon most folks would be glad the area had a sewage plant - that is until they had to live next to it.

Yes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but sometimes it depends on the studied eye of the beholder.

I remember as an entrepreneurial youngster, Sanger Stabler and I made up bouquets of pretty ragweed and gorgeous goldenrod to sell door to door. Needless to say, we had many doors slammed in our face until a kindly elderly women explained to us why.

She then suggested we dig, clean and bag sassafras roots and she would be our first customer. At 10 cents a bag we not only paid for the little brown bags and the string to tie them shut, we kept ourselves in moon pies and RC until fishing season came around and nature provided another bounty for avaricious 10 year olds. - Jon Halsey

(For your ears only, Mr. Halsey - Goldenrod gets a bum rap as an allergen. Ragwood, which blossoms about the same time, is to blame. I couldn't say that in front of Victoria Pike, who may be packing heat. - EW)
