Teaching certificate of Hall of Fame member presented to WKU Mrs. Jessie P. Jackson, who started teaching in a rural, two room school at Rocky Point, Monroe County, KY, is a member of the Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame and will celebrate her 101st birthday Thursday, September 26, 2013 News from Western Kentucky University BOWLING GREEN, KY - Western Kentucky University's College of Education and Behavioral Sciences accepted a generous gift from Mrs. Jessie P. Jackson, a WKU graduate and member of the Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame. Dr. Lisa Murley, Jackson's granddaughter, presented Dean Sam Evans with her grandmother's teaching certificate on Monday, September 23, 2013, as part of a celebration for her 101st birthday, which is Thursday, September 26, 2013. In 1930, Jessie Pearl Comer Jackson enrolled in Western Kentucky State Teacher College. She obtained her degree by traveling over 60 miles and attending summer school, as well as Saturday classes. In 1956, Jackson received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education at WKU. After reaching her goal of seeking a teacher certification, Jackson returned to Monroe County and began her career in a rural, one-room, two-teacher school at Rocky Point. She taught first through eighth grade and has held her teaching credentials from WKU for 84 years. In 2009, Jackson was inducted into the Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame. "Get all the education you can" is Jackson's advice to anyone pursuing a career in teaching. Kentucky author Jesse Stuart once said: "Good teaching is forever and the teacher is immortal." Jackson's 84 years of teaching gave her the opportunity to serve as a positive influence on so many students. Even though Jackson is no longer teaching, her influence will truly live forever.
