Charles H. McMurtrey, 87, Summer Shade, KY (d. Sept. 23, 2013) He was the patriarch of a distinguished Metcalfe County family, the son of the late Herman L and Hazel Grider. His wife of 61 years, Arlene Morgan McMurtrey, survives. He leaves 18 direct living descendants. Charles was owner and operator of McMurtrey Funeral Home,which was started by his father, Herman in 1929. He was also owner/operator of McMurtrey Planing Mill which manufactured truck bodies for many years. Je also participated in many civic organizations. He was a charter member of the Summer Shade Lions Club: served on the Metcalfe County School Board from 1960 - 1967: and a member of the Monroe County Home Health Board for several years. Charles was a weather observer for the National Weather Service for over 50 years. He also served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Cadet. Charles Huston McMurtrey, age 87, of Summer Shade passed away Monday, September 23, 2013, at TJ Samson Community Hospital, Glasgow, KY. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 25 beginning at noon and continuing Thursday. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 27 at 10amCT, at McMurtrey Funeral Home, 2232 Summer Shade Road, Summer Shade, KY, with Bro. Gary Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Summer Shade Cemetery. He was the son of the late Herman L and Hazel Grider McMurtrey.
